The NorthDuring the war, in the north women wanted to help out with the union. They provided food and clothing to the troops. Because many women wanted to work caring for the injured on the front lines, in June 1861 the federal government created United States Sanitary Commission which improved hygiene for the troops and also worked to prevent disease. 20,000 worked for the union war.
The SouthWomen in the South also wanted to help out with the confederate army, just as much as northern women wanted to help with the Union. The south did not have the industry most clothes were made by hand. They also did a lot by hand because they had less money. They sewed uniforms, sandbags and blankets. They also cooked and wrote letters to soldiers.
Slave WomenMany of the southern women relied on the slaves to do the work for them . They could not contribute to the unions cause. Many times the confederate army imprisoned male slaves, making the women have to do the roles of their partners. Also, when slave owners fled from the union they took valuable slaves which were the men. Leaving women with children alone.
