Took Place in Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862.
The Union army was heading towards the confederates capital. The confederates army dug trenches to give them a higher ground. The confederates were successful.
Both sides had heavy losses.
General Ambrose Burnside, for the union resigned due to his loss.
Battle of Fort Donelson
Took place at Fort Donelson on February 13th through the 16th, 1862.
Ulysses S. Grant initiated the battle when he tried to capture a confederates battery, which was outside the fort. He was unsuccessful. Grant had his troops become tighter around the fort to attack. On February 15th the confederates tried to break the unions line. This set the union back. Then, Grant had a counter attack gaining them the ground they lost. Some rebels managed to escape but the fort was surrendered to the Yankees on February 16th.
2,700 people died.
The union won. Grant asked for a "unconditional immediate surrender" and was promoted to major general. Kentucky was taken from the confederates to the union.
Battle of Bull Run
Took place in northern Virginia, near a small river called bull run on July 21, 1861.
The union was expecting a win. People from D.C came to watch the battle from afar. Both the Yankees and the rebels did not have experience in battles. At first, the north war winning but then the rebels broke the unions line.
In total about 900 people died.
The confederates won and the union realized it was not going to be a short and easy win.
Battle of Shiloh
Took place in south western Tennessee on April 6th to the 7th, 1862.
The confederates continued to force the union back, towards Pittsburgh landing. This would trap them against the Tennessee River. With all the force the rebels were using they were worn out and their leader was dead. The next day the union managed to to push back the confederates to Shiloh church.
There was 23,000 casualties.
The union won the battle but it served as a reminder that the war would be long and hard.
